The Parallax View

Northern Minnesota, close to the Canadian border, is the setting for the storm-bound town in The Whip Hand. The film places a vacationing fisherman in this remote region, where a rainstorm drives him to seek shelter and medical help—and where the town’s ordinary appearance gradually gives way to a concealed germ-warfare operation.

Setting and First Encounter

A rainstorm soaks the fisherman while he is on vacation in northern Minnesota. After falling against a rock and sustaining a head injury, he takes refuge in a local town and asks for help getting treatment. The location is introduced through this sequence of physical vulnerability and shelter: the storm brings him into the town, but does not make its residents welcoming.

The Town and Its Hidden Activity

The townspeople are only perfunctorily friendly, apart from an innkeeper who appears outgoing and jokey. Their accounts repeatedly contradict one another. Across the lake, a lodge becomes the focus of suspicion: the doctor makes nocturnal visits there but does not want to discuss them. The eventual explanation is that Communists have already taken over the town and made it a center for the study of germ warfare.

Narrative Significance

The northern Minnesota setting anchors a reversal of the early-1950s invasion-film pattern, in which an ordinary American arriving in a small town discovers that aliens have taken control. That familiar scenario is often read as an allegory of a Communist takeover; The Whip Hand instead makes the Communist conspiracy literal. Yet the plotters themselves acquire an alien-like aura. The setting thus supports the film’s larger point about metaphor: identifying a supposed metaphor’s real-world referent does not dispel the metaphorical image. Once the substitution has taken place, the reality it names remains haunted by that image.
